What is Solar Power?

Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity using Photovoltaics (PV). It is a green, renewable and free energy source that is used in residential and commercial buildings to supplement or totally displace energy that would otherwise come from the grid

So how does it work?

It all starts with the Solar Panels which consist of a series of photo-voltaic cells that convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity which are connected to vital components in each system that enable the use of the energy. 

  1. Inverters -  Inverters play a crucial role in any solar energy system and are often considered the brains of a project whether it is a 3KW residential system or a 200KW commercial application. An inverters basic function is to invert the direct current (DC) output into alternating current (AC). AC is the standard used by all commercial appliances. There are two primary systems for converting the DC (direct current) generated from a Solar Panel to AC (alternating current) commonly called micro Inverter technology and string inverter technology.

  2. Micro inverters - This technology consists of small inverters that sit under each individual solar panel and convert generated DC electricity to AC power at the panel itself, so there’s no need for an inverter box on the inside or outside of your house. Micro inverters allow panels to generate electricity independently, so even if some panels are affected by shade, the rest will still generate to their optimum output.

  3. String Inverter systems -The string inverter is made up of a string that connects rows of solar panels to a main inverter box, situated on an internal or external wall. The inverter converts the total generated electricity from DC (direct current) to AC (alternating current) at the central inverter, so the power can be used in your home.

  4. Distribution Board - The AC electricity is sent from the inverter to the distribution board and then into your building to provide free power for use on demand.

  5. Grid Connection - when more power is being generated than is being consumed, the surplus power is fed into the mains power grid. Where there is an arrangement with your power provider there is a specified credit on your bill for each KW of energy exported.

  6. Off Grid - An off-grid solar solution can be set up to enable the property to function without the requirement for any electricity for the local supplier. Typically this would be an isolated location where the cost of connecting to the grid is too expensive. An off grid solutions will typically consist of a blend of technologies with the primary energy generator being Solar Power with battery storage.
